Sales: How a Medical Representative can win a Non-prescriber Doctor’s Prescription

Cracking the Rx Code: How a Medical Representative Wins a Doctor’s Prescription
Every Field Sales Officer (FSO) in the Indian pharma market knows the grind: waiting
outside an OPD for two hours, battling heat and traffic, only to get a two-minute call.
You detail the products, hand over LBL, Samples & Reminder cards and leave with a polite
"Thank you Doctor, please prescribe…"
Few days later, you check the nearby chemist.

Zero strips movement…
Changing a doctor’s prescription habit is tough. Doctors are creature-of-habit prescribers
who stick with brands that have never let their patients down. To move their pen to your
brand, you cannot just be a Visual Aid detailer; you must understand the psychology of the
of prescription generation.

1. Build Trust Through Clinical Competence

A doctor does not change a prescription because of glossy visual aid or catchy brand
names. They change the Prescription when they trust that the drug delivers clinical efficacy
and patient safety.
 Know your brand’s main advantages completely.
 Don’t just memorize brand USPs; explain why & how of Product advantage
(For example, how your sustained-release formulation in your product reduces gastric
irritation & improves patient compliance)
 Speak the doctor’s language Use correct technical terms: (For example, use the term
Myocardial Infarction (MI) & not Heart Attack which is a lay man’s term
Or

Talk about Erythrocyte (Not RBC) Leucocyte (Not WBC) Thrombocyte (Not platelets)

2. Resolve an Actual Practice Issue:

Doctors face daily clinical pain points: high patient drop-out rates, costly therapies for
chronic conditions, or erratic local drug availability.
 Position your brand as an answer to a specific patient profile (e.g., My brand is useful
for elderly hypertensive patients with renal impairment).
 Ensure chemist availability first. A single "Tis brand is not available" response from
the retail chemist will permanently kill the doctor’s second prescription. Doctors do not
trust the words “Freely available” used by all Pharma Company Representatives

3. Demonstrate Dependability with Your Frontline Leadership

Conversion is rarely a
solo sport. When you face an non-prescriber Doctor, involve your First-Line Manager
(ABM/DM) to help in conversion process & take advantage of a Senior person’s knowledge
& experience.
 Use joint calls to demonstrate clinical depth. When a manager helps to handle
Doctor’s objections and earn the doctor's respect through high-level scientific
discussion, overall business development process takes place.
 Follow up reliably. If a doctor asks for a clinical trial paper or a specific PS, deliver it
on the committed date without fail. Do not give wrong promises which you can not
fulfil.

4. Execute the "Triangular Push" : Doctor, Chemist, Stockist

Prescription influence doesn't stop inside the clinic.
 Monitor the chemist counter immediately after securing a Doctors commitment to
prescribe. Verify if your prescription was honoured or substituted through a competitor
brand because of non-availability or despite availability Chemist did not recognise a
new brand in Doctor’s prescription.

 Maintain clean trade relations between the local stockist and retail chemist so stock
outages never break an emerging prescription habit.

In summary, Doctors prescribe brands backed by dependable professionals. When you
present yourself not merely as a salesperson chasing targets, but as an informed therapy
consultant who respects their practice, that prescription pad will naturally turn in your
favour.
